The Internet is the perfect sales tool for a company like Postaprint, with a fast turnover of thousands of prints. An illustrated catalogue would be too expensive to produce to be viable, and it would be out of date on the day of publication. Whereas updating an illustrated website is relatively inexpensive and can be done daily.
Postaprint has been selling antique prints, maps and books by mail order for over 20 years (up until now their main sales tool was a typed list). They hold stock of over 250,000 items, plus around 37,000 engravings from the London Illustrated News and similar 19th century periodicals, plus a database of Vanity Fair caricatures. Though Postaprint is a UK company, prices are quoted in dollars unless you specifically request pounds or euros.
I typed ‘Alken’ into the main database and three items were shown, two of them illustrated. There was a set of eight grubby’ aquatints for $60, an illustrated book for $143 and a small hunting print for $38. A search for ‘medical’ revealed an 1810 engraving of the Royal College of Physicians for $15 and around 400 old magazine advertisements for medical supplies. There were four prints of Hammersmith, 147 prints and maps of Nottingham . . . I could have spent all day in this site.
The Vanity Fair database can be searched using such unusual criteria as beards, glasses and swords. I found five legal caricatures, 19 cricketers and 431 beards. I typed my birthday into the ‘Dated Gifts’ database, which came up with 47 prints published on that day.
This is a thoroughly professional site. It has submitted itself to Internet watchdogs Netcheck and Public Eye and there is free purchase protection through WebAssured.
What else. Prices start at a few dollars; the site is regularly updated; and the ‘Wants List Registery’ immediately lets you know additions to stock matching your requirements

I received the Clarendon Prints of the English Monarchs today. I was very pleased to find they were of the exact size I was looking for! By cutting at the plate mark I was able to extra illustrate my Histories by John Hayward from the early 17th century. And best of all I was not forced to fold the plates, or cut off the decorative borders. I don't think I could have found a better set! Most of what I looked at was always too large. Thanks for your help!!!!
